Cause & Effect
A Military Organization Takes Action
Any organization with over 1,400 employees is going to face major challenges from time to time. One of our DOD clients had recently encountered a rash of automobile accidents that they deemed “unacceptable.”
Establishing Program Goals and Objectives
Since management had an especially low tolerance for any workplace incidents, they took a proactive stance in making sure that every employee successfully completed the Driving Safety training course ASAP.
Based on their prior experiences, we were told that it would take months to successfully train 1,400 personnel for each course.
Their focus centered on rolling out our service quickly and monitoring course completions...and hoping that the accidents would cease.
Program Implementation and Early Results
Adoption was immediate and constant during the initial period. Over 1,000 individual safety training courses were completed during the first 48 hours.
Within 72 hours, all 1,400 employees had taken the online driving safety course and the record keeping system documented each certificate.
In addition, each employee continued to take at least one safety training course per month for the remainder of the first year.
The end results are as follows:
- A 47% reduction of workplace accidents/injuries,
- A 32% reduction in lost work days, and
- Their finest safety record in the last 13 years.
Lessons Learned About Changing Employee Behavior
- Web-based employee training is by far the most cost-effective, efficient, and consistent method of training multiple employees in multiple locations.
- Without management support and leadership, both short-term adoption and long-term compliance would be difficult, if not impossible.
- Effective employee training that educates employees on proper behavior works!
- Training is the critical element to change unsafe employee behavior. Safety training content should not only provide proper instruction, but also shock employees out of their complacency.
