On the job and at home tips:

  • When working low, bend your knees, but be careful.
  • Plant your feet firmly for all lifting.
  • Dismount from platforms and vehicles carefully - do not jump.
  • Do not try to catch falling objects.
  • Support your back while driving.
  • Use moving and lifting tools such as hand trucks, lifts, hoists and dollies.
  • Choose light weight tools such as shovels and hoes with long handles.
  • Stand near the work instead of reaching. Do not twist.
  • When shoveling, keep hands wide apart for good leverage.
  • Use work saving devices such as wheelbarrows.
  • Stop and stretch often.
  

Some tips that help strengthen the stomach and torso muscles and can greatly increase back strength:

  • Routine physical workouts and conditioning help prevent back injuries.
  • Do more sit-ups and stomach exercises.
  • Periodically include an exercise routine during your workday.
  • Good diet and nutrition is key to physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
