SHARING THE ROAD WITH MOTORCYCLES
Approximately 75% of motorcycle accidents involved collision with another vehicle (usually a passenger automobile). Here are some
tips regarding safe driving around motorcycles:
- Share the road - Give
the motorcycle the same amount of space as you would need for an automobile.
- Retrain your eyes- Be
alert for motorcycles, they can be in your blind spot, on the
edge of a traffic lane or screened by another car. Don't just
use your mirrors, but glance over your shoulder for cyclists.
A safety-conscious motorcyclist will keep their headlight on,
even in the daytime.
- Judge distance- Because a motorcycle is smaller, it may appear farther
away than it actually is and may seem to be moving more slowly.
Allow yourself more following distance when overtaking a motorcycle.
Add time to the 3-second rule for defensive driving.
- Watch for motorcycle hazards
- Never follow a motorcycle too closely - the same hazards that
can entrap an automobile driver may cause a motorcycle to take
a spill. Give yourself plenty of room to maneuver, if needed.
