EXPRESSWAY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING
The techniques for driving on an expressway or highway are different
from those used on other roads.
Hints for driving on an expressway or highway:
Merging into Traffic
When merging onto an expressway or highway, speed up in the
acceleration lane to match the speed of traffic.
Speed

Never slow down abruptly in a traffic lane, try to maintain
the pace set by the majority.
Stopping Do not stop and never back up. If you miss an exit go the next
one. Emergency Stopping
If you have an emergency, pull completely off the road to the
farthest edge of the shoulder. Distance to other Vehicles
Do not tailgate - prevent chain reaction crashes. Plan Ahead
Know how to get to your destination and read the signs. At high
speeds there is little chance to second-guess. Passing or Lane Changing
Prepare ahead of time for passing or changing lanes, use your
turn signals and double-check your mirrors and blind spots for
other vehicles. Night Driving
Resist the temptation to overdrive your headlights at night.
Good lights only illuminate about 450 feet ahead.
Alertness
Be wary of fatigue and fight monotony and boredom with a rest
at least every two hours. Exiting High Speed Highways
When leaving the expressway, slow down in the deceleration lane
to ramp speed - use your speedometer not your senses. Weather Conditions
Slow down in bad weather - adjust your driving to meet the conditions.
