Driving Safety - Lesson 2 |
|
EXTERNAL CONDITIONS
There are four principal conditions that can increase the risk of an accident.
Lighting Conditions
Be able to see and be seen. The nighttime
fatal incident rate is more than double the daytime rate. Make sure your
vehicle's headlights are working properly and aimed correctly. Use your
sun visor and sunglasses to block glare coming through the windshield. |

Road Conditions
The type and condition of the entire road surface
affects our ability to steer, stop, and maneuver. Any trip may involve a
variety of road conditions, each requiring adjustment in our driving. |
|
Weather Conditions
Bad weather can affect traction, visibility and
vehicle control. |

Traffic Conditions
Traffic conditions are a result of vehicles and
pedestrians using the same road at the same time. They are influenced by
the time of day, day of week, and time of year. |
General Actions Relative to Conditions
- If possible, plan your driving time and route to avoid congestion.
- Never exceed the general pace of traffic on a given road.
- Allow adequate distance from the vehicle in front of you.
Allow motorcycles as much space as another car.
- Watch for wind turbulence when passing large trucks, motor
homes or campers.
- Use extra caution when driving at night:
- Dim your high beams well in advance of oncoming traffic.
- Never look at the oncoming car's headlights.
- Keep your eyes to the right half of your lane to avoid being
blinded by oncoming headlights.
- Never "out drive" your headlights -
