Driving Safety - Lesson 2a

EXTERNAL CONDITIONS, CONTINUED

Weather Condition Specifics:animation of a car driving in the rain

  • Slippery Roads - Reduce speed. Wet roads and excessive speed cause tires to slip, hydroplane or skim on the surface of the water, which results in loss of control.
  • Reactions in Mud, Ice or Snow - Use low gear and maintain a steady but moderate speed with a light touch on the steering wheel. If you have a 2-wheel-drive vehicle, do not drive in heavy mud or deep snow.

If stuck, shift the transmission back and forth between a forward range and reverse, creating a rocking motion that may break you free. Do not let anyone stand near the vehicle when you are rocking it and do not spin the wheels faster than 25 mph.

  • Fog - Reduce speed, put your headlights on (low beams only). The road may be wet and slippery; visibility is reduced. Signal your intentions well in advance. Remember, the car behind you cannot see either.
